Prepare for an Emergency Now!

This blog is longer than most but it is all vital information!

You never know when it will happen.  When I opened my office six years ago, I hung a flashlight on the corner of a shelf.  It has been untouched all that time.  Well, last night while I was working, we had a major storm.

Quick Kitchen Project

Taking my own advice....

Yesterday when I tried to close the drawer which holds my plastic lids for storage containers, I realized I had to do something. Lids were trying their best to jump out, crawl out, or fall out the bottom; there were just too many pieces in the drawer.

Time to have a Lid Party!  So this morning I took all the lids out and put like ones together.  Taking all of them out at once would make me finish the project. Next, I emptied the drawer that was filled with all the bottoms and put like sizes together.

Conquer Your Junk Drawer - Quick, inexpensive organizing project to jump-start organized!

Here is an easy and fun project that is quick, inexpensive. People tell me this is so fun and that it motivates them to do other projects.

1. Dump the contents of your junk drawer onto a cleared space covered with
newspaper.
2. Assemble all the different size zippy bags you have - snack, sandwich, quart, etc.
3. Pick out all the items from the drawer that need to be returned to other areas of the house.  Then return them.
4. Sort items you want to stay in the junk drawer and put them in the appropriate size clear zippy bag.

GUEST BLOG: Party at Mary’s House

Last week my husband and I enjoyed a delightful get-together at Mary’s home with several of her children and their families.

“How nice”, you’re thinking.   “And???”

Mary and I have been having a lively “discussion” for the past few years about how much fun (my viewpoint) or how much stress (her viewpoint) having an open house for her clients would be.

Mary lives in a century-old farm house.  Her gingerbread office is just a walk- thru- the- garden away.  Horses play in the pasture behind, cats sun themselves on the porch

Overwhelming project

Spring is here – hooray! That is, until I think about my yard. The problem with living in the country is that your yard can keep getting extended. So while I get excited with the daffodils blooming and more flowers to come, getting everything into shape is overwhelming. So I said, “Mary, practice what you preach. Look at your yard like a room and start in the corner”. I picked one side of the front porch.  But that needed a lot of work, so I saw one small area by the lamp post where I could get a quick, easy win.

Do You Hate Filing?

Honestly, I hate filing just like you do. Last week I realized my personal stack of insurance papers, receipts, etc…. needed filing. So I had to practice what I preach:  I wrote it on my calendar to do Saturday morning. If I hadn't made that commitment, I would have kept letting the stack get bigger. Next I figured out a way to eliminate the boredom and the pain of doing it. I timed the filing so I was listening to Car Talk on NPR. Now don't get me wrong.

Time Management When Children Are at Home

Did I have a big reminder of how little you get done with a 2 year old at your feet!  My granddaughter Ava and I were spending some special time together.  By 11 o’clock I finally had the kitchen cleaned up. I had a big laugh when I thought about what I teach on procrastination. You may have heard me use the illustration about emptying a dishwasher – a 3 -5 minute project, so Do It Now!  Make that an hour project or more when you have a little one helping, interrupting, and causing you to stop and play. About the time the kitchen was cleaned up it was time to start lunch.

Snow Day - No car day!

What did you do on your snow day? If you don’t live in East Tennessee you may be saying, “What snow day?”  Yesterday we woke up to 5+ inches of snow. Which was okay, it was predicted and it was Sat. – good timing. Really, it is nice being home, feeling good and not have a choice to leave. One of my clients with young children says she tries to plan “No car days.” We definitely had a “No car day.” That would probably do a lot to reduce our stress as adults if we did that regularly.

How to De-Clutter and Save Money at the Same Time!

This combination really works! I decided that instead of buying new make-up, I had to first look in my stash. You know - the one we all have, but put in a bottom drawer. My goal was to decide to use it, toss it or donate it depending on the condition. I found items in all of the above categories. So then I decided to use the same criteria for not replacing hair stuff. Why do I have a stash of mousse?

Cleaning Out the Garage

My oldest son came and we purged the garage. Really, you could call it a carriage house because in the past that is all it would hold. Thankfully, it is not attached to my 100-year-old farm house, because it has become the storage space for everything besides a carriage. So on this day that the cleaning out took place, if you could have been a mouse in the corner, I am sure you would have had lots of laughs. This went like one of the TV organizing shows – he wanted to discard what I felt was important.
